Use of the Pillsbury Doughboy

Take a look at these two ads featuring the Pillsbury Doughboy, and note how the icons are used in each one. While both Doughboys appear to be “involved” in the baking process (i.e. the knife in the first one and potholders in the second), the older Doughboy appears less “alive” than the second one. While technological advances may have contributed to the ability to make the Pillsbury Doughboy become more animated, could there be other reasons for this change of use?
